Gilda's Club is May's Non Profit of the Month

Eastland Mall is proud to announce that Gilda's Club of Evansville is our Non Profit of the Month for May.

Gilda’s Club is named after Gilda Radner, one of the original cast members of “Saturday Night Live.” Throughout her time on the show, she created a number of enduring characters, including Roseanne Roseannadanna, Emily Litella and Baba Wawa. Laughter and love were central themes of Gilda’s career and life, including in her marriage to actor and comedian Gene Wilder.

When Gilda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986 she quickly realized the importance of emotional and social support when dealing with her cancer. After attending the Wellness Community in Southern California, Gilda called for such places of participation, education, hope and friendship to be made available to men, women and children with any type of cancer and their families and friends. Gilda Radner died in May 1989 and her husband, Gene Wilder, and Joanna Bull (Gilda’s psychotherapist) founded the flagship Gilda’s Club in New York City – fulfilling Gilda’s dream and legacy.

In July 2009, Gilda’s Club Worldwide and The Wellness Community merged to become the Cancer Support Community (CSC). As a CSC affiliate, Gilda’s Club helps to optimize patient care by providing a Program to address essential social and emotional support. Today, this organization provides anyone living with cancer and their families and friends support communities through a network of more than 50 local affiliates, 100 satellite locations and through online resources.

Similarly, Gilda’s Club Evansville (GCEVV) was inspired by the vision of Ann Moore who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and also dreamed of a local community of support for herself, family and friends. It is due to the dedication of Ann, her husband Randy, and their ever-expanding circle of friends that Gilda’s Club Evansville officially opened our Red Door on February 6, 2014; making Ann’s dream a reality. It is because of the generosity of individual and corporate donors and community foundation grants that GCEVV is privileged to offer many Program activities, groups, and classes for anyone living with cancer and their families and friends thus fulfilling our Mission: to serve as a community of caring individuals that provide social, emotional, and educational support to all people impacted by cancer.
